Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been officially endorsed by Thailand’s king as the new prime minister, following her election by parliament. At 37, she is the youngest person to hold this position in Thailand. Her appointment comes shortly after the Constitutional Court dismissed Srettha Thavisin as premier.

Paetongtarn, who comes from a prominent political family, secured nearly two-thirds of the votes in the House of Representatives. She is the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the niece of Yingluck Shinawatra, Thailand’s first female prime minister.

During the ceremony in Bangkok, House of Representatives Secretary Apat Sukhanand read out the king’s formal approval. Paetongtarn, the second female prime minister of Thailand and leader of the Pheu Thai Party, has strong backing from senior party leaders and coalition partners.

Although she has not yet selected her cabinet, it is expected to be similar to that of her predecessor. At the ceremony, Paetongtarn pledged to work with legislators with an open heart and to listen to all opinions to ensure the country’s stability.
